Reba on 24 hours of Moab

24 Hours of Moab AKA 24 Hours of Sandblast by Rebecca Rusch

Last weekend marked the 14th annual 24 Hours of Moab event in Utah.  This was my fourth visit to this race and each one has been memorable. The desert has a way of dealing out weather extremes that either break people or make them thrive.  I headed down to Moab as part of a 25-person posse from my hometown in Ketchum, ID.  There were various teams of various abilities and we all set up a giant Idaho camping compound together.  The extra company made for some great, late night chats, provided extra people to commiserate with and supplied a vast amount of storytelling about flats, broken bikes, crashes, and bonks.

XC MTB Team Update ...

Another season is over! Since Schladming a good bit has happened.

Lene did some local races in Norway, but has been feeling tired. Slowly but surely her symptoms revealed "shingles", which is essentially a form of Chicken Pox. Doctors orders and Lene was to rest up, which put an end to her season and Roc D'Azur, the season finale.

Liam has been pestered with injuries following his fall in Beijing, but specifically a bad wrist injury, which turned into tendonitis. Liam barely made the start line at Roc D'Azur and in the final hour of racing his wrist gave him a lot of trouble - he still finished! Liam now needs to rest up.

Conrad Stoltz wins the USA XTerra Series for a sixth time

What a weird, weird day by Conrad Stoltz

I finished 8th. 8 minutes down.

In my whole racing career, I have never had legs as amazingly empty in a race, especially after feeling so good in the lead up. I wish I could have posted my Tuesday bike time instead of my race day bike time. Even including the almost BASE jump in the time.

Trond Hansen wins 26TRIX in Leogang

Munich September 22nd, 2008 - report by Rasoulution

Last Friday and Saturday, 30 riders from 12 countries rocked the mega sized 26TRIX dirt line in Leogang, Austria. With two stunning runs Norwegian Trond Hansen took first place and earned himself 3.500 Euros in cash. Andi Wittmann from Germany showed technically very difficult combos on the most tricky parts of the track and won the Oakley Sick-O-Award.

On Thursday evening the bottom part of the Bikepark Leogang was packed with riding, chilling and chatting young guns from all over the world. The guys from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, Australia and the US had to get used to the revised 26TRIX track: nine jumps consisting of big sized doubles, hips, step ups and downs.

Reba the firefighter

MY PART TIME JOB by Rebecca Rusch

Some of you may not know this, but I am a part time firefighter/EMT in my hometown of Ketchum, ID.  I have been working for the Ketchum Fire Department for about 3 years and it’s a great diversion from becoming a one dimensional bike geek.  I spent the early part of this week working on a major fire that burned two commercial buildings on Main Street in Ketchum.  It was by far the biggest structure fire I have ever seen and reported to be the biggest one the town of Ketchum has ever seen.  The video clip below tells the best story and shows stunning images of what it was really like that morning.  All I can say is that it was a very intense experience. Watch for yourself.

Susi wins the World Cup Final in Schladming, Austria

The team arrived in Schladming, Austria on Wednesday for the final round of world cup racing. It’s been a long world schedule with nine rounds in total, plus world championships in both marathon plus cross-country and of course the Olympic Games. As always, despite some weary bodies at season end, spirits have been high all week, as they usually are.

An interview with Reba

Reba’s Rapid Rise: Meet Specialized’s Endurance Specialist September 5th, 2008 by Yuri Hauswald (taken from www.bikemonkey.net)

Rebecca Rusch’s(Specialized) meteoric rise in the cycling endurance race scene, specifically 24 hour solo events, is nothing short of spectacular considering that the Ketchum, Idaho resident only started mountain bike racing three years ago. In that short span of time she has racked up two 24 hour solo World Championships, a national title, and countless victories in 12 hour events. The one time uber adventure racer won, what is widely considered to be the pinnacle of adventure races, the Raid Gauloises in Kyrgyzstan in 2002. Here are a few excerpts of an interview I did with her this summer, the entire article will be featured in our next issue of Bike Monkey.

Bike Monkey: Biggest accomplishments, so far, on and off the bike?

Soup Caveman Style

I learnt this recipe from master chef and long time house mate Jan Bekker. (Who has defected to Australia recently for “work”)

My prerequisite for a good soup:

- It has to be quick to prepare. (Athletes are always hungry and usually have to eat NOW!)

- It has to be easy to throw together. When you are bonked from a 4 hr training session, you dont want to go scour the back alleys of a certain ethnic neighbourhood to get the ingredients.

- It has to be healthy. (Or ice cream would have worked just as well)

As with almost every thing I cook, I’ll make enough for a number of meals and save it in the fridge. It reduces dish washing and you’ll be prepared for the FOOD NOW feeling next time you are so bonked you feel ants walking on your head.

Ok, enough chit chat, here are the goodies, mate:

Cut roughly straight into large pot:

- 1 large head of Broccoli.
